Right-handed pitcher Patrick Murphy, 28, is expected to join the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) organization.
Japan’s Nikkan Sports reported on Wednesday that the Nippon Ham Fighters are trying to sign Murphy. Murphy is a free agent after this season and is looking for a new team. He has turned his attention to Asian baseball and has been in contact with NPB teams, with Nippon Ham being the favorite. In the U.S., he was expected to sign a one-year deal with a 2025 option.굿모닝토토
Murphy, a third-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, made his big league debut in 2020. He was claimed off waivers by the Washington Nationals in August 2021 and signed with the Minnesota Twins last December. In his three-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career, Murphy is 3-3 with a 4.76 ERA in 35 games and five starts. All of his appearances have come out of the bullpen. In eight years in the minors, he was 33-31 with 10 saves and a 3.49 ERA as a swingman who split time between the mound and bullpen. This season, with no big league appearances, he spent 42 games (four starts) at Triple-A Minnesota, going 6-4 with a 3.69 ERA and six saves. He struck out 10.2 batters per nine innings.
Nikkan Sports describes Murphy as “a 6-foot-2 right-handed pitcher with a fastball that tops out at 159 mph. According to MLB scouting site FanGraphs.com, Murphy has two pitches in 2022: a four-seam fastball and a curveball. His four-seam fastball averages 95.7 mph (154 km/h). His fastball is monotonous, but it’s the type of pitch that scares hitters with its power.
