The LG Baseball Organization’s courtship of right-handed pitcher Im Chan-kyu, 31, who hit the free agent market this winter, is in full swing. Negotiations with other teams have been relatively quiet.
A former LG Twins fan who realized his dream of becoming a professional athlete, Lim has played exclusively for LG from 2011 until this year. Because of this, there is a general consensus that a move to another club is unlikely.
LG fans and players are hoping that he will stay with the team, as he has become a representative star of LG and has reached his peak this year.
Speaking to reporters after winning the best pitcher award at the 2023 First Baseball League Awards ceremony held at Rivera Hotel in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on April 8, Im said, “I’m happy when I’m told that I’m the player the team needs. Not only the manager, coach, and general manager, but also my teammates want me to stay, and that’s the greatest happiness.”
“I feel like I’ve had a good life at LG for 13 years. It’s great to be welcomed by people who are like family,” he smiled.
At the Ilgoo Award ceremony, LG CEO Cha Myung-seok and Lim Chan-gyu, who are close friends, joked about free agent signings.
“The 1.2 million spectators were difficult, winning the championship after 29 years was difficult, but the most difficult thing was signing Chan-gyu Lim as a free agent,” said Cha, who took the podium on behalf of LG, which received the Front Award, and said, “Let’s get a stamp while we’re here,” causing the audience to laugh.굿모닝토토
In response, Lim Chan-gyu, who said, “I left my stamp at home,” said, “It’s not that it’s difficult to negotiate with me, but I think it’s difficult to measure my (value). The agent only met me once, and he said it in a respectful tone. I’m really grateful.”
In fact, Cha and Lim reportedly only met once.
Cha delayed negotiations for a group report, and Im’s agent, Lee Yerang of Ricoh Sports, is currently in the United States. Negotiations are not expected to move forward until Lee returns home.
“I know that Lee Yerang and the general manager met once and talked on the phone once, so there hasn’t been much talk yet,” Lim said, adding, “I think something will happen next week.”
“Every player probably wants to sign quickly, but there’s no rush. I’m going to think about it calmly and work out,” he said.
When asked if there were any offers from other clubs, Lim Chan-gyu said, “It was quiet,” and then added, “Isn’t it going to be an atmosphere of signing with LG?” to show his intention to stay.
Im, who was also eligible for free agency after last season, went 6-11 with a 5.04 ERA and waived his rights.
After opting for “free agency bad luck,” Lim had his best year yet this year. He posted a respectable 14-3 record with a 3.42 ERA in 30 games, and won the unified championship for the first time since his professional debut.
“The afterglow was stronger about 10 days after the championship than it was immediately afterward,” says Lim. I was busy here and there, but when I had a little time to watch the video, I got emotional,” he said, adding, “I want to win with LG next year and the year after.” He expressed his love for the team.
Lim Chan-kyu, who won the Rookie of the Year Award at the 2011 Ilgusang Awards, emphasized, “I wasn’t consistent, there were ups and downs, but I was able to come back to the Ilgusang Awards based on that experience.” “I think it will be an opportunity to come back often in the future,” he said.
