Brazil’s prestigious Sao Paulo officially acknowledged on the 10th that it announced coach Junior’s appointment to the national team.

Brazil struggled in the absence of its head coach as it only advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2022 Qatar World Cup. With Cicci stepping down by himself, it failed to bring in a new leader.

Brazil wanted to put Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti at the helm, but failed to negotiate. The gap in between has dealt a big blow to Brazil’s move to the South American qualifying round for the 2026 North-China World Cup. Brazil, a regular guest of the World Cup finals, is ranked sixth with two wins, one draw and three losses in the South American qualifying round. This is why acting coach Fernando Danis was replaced on the 6th.

In the end, Brazil had no choice but to find a new coach in a hurry and appoint a Brazilian-verified coach, Junior.

Coach Junior has had successful leadership careers in prestigious pro teams such as Cruzeiro, Vasco da Gama, Santos and Flamengo. He led Sao Paulo to the top in the FA Cup in Brazil last year.

Coach Junior, who should lead Brazil’s revival, is expected to make his debut in March. Attention is focusing on whether he will lift the trophy at the Copa America in the U.S. this year. Brazil’s last championship was in 2019.
