The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) held an executive committee meeting online today (May 15) to announce the launch of the Women’s Champions League for the 2024-2025 season.
The AFC has organized the AFC Women’s Club Championship since 2019, which will be expanded into the Champions League from the 2024-2025 season.
The 2022 AFC Women’s Club Championship was split between East and West Asia, with Asian Scholars College of Thailand winning the East Asian title and Sogdiana Zizak of Uzbekistan winning the West Asian title.
For the 2024-2025 season, the AFC Women’s Champions League will initially be played as an invitational competition, with the AFC announcing at a later date how many teams will compete.
Meanwhile, the AFC has also decided to split the men’s club competition into tiers from the 2024-2025 season, with a significant increase in prize money.
There will be 24 teams competing in the AFC Champions League Elite, the top club competition, and 32 teams competing in the AFC Champions League 2, the next tier down.
